This problem can be cause by a couple of possibilities (Ranked in Priority)
  1. A faulty miniature aircon On/Off switch, Easiest & Cheapest To Repair
  2. A faulty aircon remote controller that keeps sending signal repeatedly
  3. A faulty aircon PCB (printed circuit board), indoor unit
  4. A faulty aircon PCB (printed circuit board), outdoor unit.
    * If it is an Inverter system, which is not common yet the most expensive to repair.
ac-switch

This is the image of a miniature aircon switch found behind the cover of the ON/OFF switch button. If the switch had gotten wet by leaking water from the fan coil unit, it will turn faulty as it behaves like you had pressed the switch, thus turning ON/OFF by itself. The simplest thing and most economical way to do is to remove the faulty switch because most people do not use it at all.

A faulty aircon remote controller that keeps sending signal repeatedly.
If your aircon remote controller is faulty, it may keep sending out signals repeatedly even when you are not pressing the button. Bring it to another air conditioner that operates using the same remote controller (if there is any) to see if the problem migrates. If it does, discard the faulty remote controller and buy a new one.

A faulty aircon PCB (printed circuit board, the electronics board), indoor unit.
If yours is an obsolete aircon model, fear not, it can be modified using another brand's remote controller equipped with a new remote controller.

A faulty aircon PCB (printed circuit board, the electronics board), outdoor unit; if it is an Inverter system.
  • * If it is an Inverter system, which is not common yet the most expensive to repair.
This only happens when it is an Inverter type of air conditioner. An inverter air conditioner is a dynamic system whereby the indoor unit and outdoor unit communicates in a 2-way manner. Some models are equipped with a condenser "test run" function. Thus, if the outdoor PCB gives trouble, it can turn on the indoor system. As mentioned before, we normally check the miniature switch first (outdoor unit).

How to tell if PCB spoil or Compressor
written by Wendy HoWendy Ho, October 21, 2010
An aircon man came to check my unit which blinks with red light every time I switch on with the remote control. The remote control can switch on other units, so there is no problem with remote. He said there is most likely a problem with the PCB in the fancoil unit. However, if I repair that, and if after that it is detected that the compressor is also not working, I'll need to change the whole condensor. The question is, prior to deciding whether to repair the PCB, how to determine if the compressor is working? I don't want to spend few hundred dollars to repair the PCB only to find that the compressor is not working then have to spend even more money to change the whole system.
